Designed by PUDDLE

PUDDLE have designed this minimal sake beer bar located in Kyoto, Japan, called before9. A former sake brewer, the owner is passionate about restoring his brewery while preserving Kyoto's "machiya" - a traditional wooden townhouse. Inspired by the traditional Japanese-style oven called "kudo", the beer taps have become the stand-out feature within the interior of the bar while offering craft beer from around the world.

The small backyard plot of land that once was is now a sunny staircase creating a sense of unity between the upper and lower levels thanks to the removal of half of the flooring on the second floor. This has created a comfortable openness when entering the bar.

This design really does offer a clear sense of cleanliness while transitioning between new and old.
